Salukis: Photographs and Advice for the World's Oldest, Most Beautiful Dog
72
Salukis
The world's oldest dog is a graceful, athletic creature that was as prized by Egyptian pharaohs as it is today. Gentle and loyal, they are a noble addition to any household.
Puppies
Saluki puppies have a long awkward stage, though even in their prebescent years they are adorable. They can take as long as three to four years to reach the height of their beauty and prime.
Saluki Temperment
Salukis make quiet and loving house pets. They seldom bark and are sweet to strangers. Bred to chase desert gazelles, Salukis can run over 30 miles per hour, and thus love chasing small animals and running free. Let a Saluki spend an hour running in a large enclosed area, and it will be ecstatic.
Bringing the Saluki Home
Salukis can be fearful of strangers if not socialized enough as puppies. They are sensitive to chastisement and need their space when being introduced to a new family and a new home. Let your Saluki come to you, and don't pressure him or her for affection, and you will be rewarded with a lifelong friend.
Health
Salukis are healthy dogs, not prone to the cancers and degenerative diseases many other breeds are. This is due at least in part to the high levels of activity they enjoy. As most sight-hounds are, they are susceptible to anesthesia because of their low body fat.
Breeding
Drawings of Salukis appear in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, and to this day, the Saluki is associated with the prime members of society. Today they are considered a wealthy man's dog, and are heavily shown at tournaments and competitions.
